About athletesDirect

Throughout Britain there are many schools that would like a visit from a successful athlete.

There are also many athletes who are accomplished at sharing their passionate love of sport and therefore able to motivate and engage young people.

athletesDIRECT aims to give schools access to these athletes.

Organisations

The scheme is run by the British Athletes Commission and supported by the TOP Foundation of the Youth Sport Trust. The Athletes Commission and YST piloted a small scheme from April 2006 - December 2007. The scheme has received the full support of all schools, athletes and sporting organisations involved.

Athletes

The Images of the registered athletes can be viewed via the Athlete Bios section. The registered athletes are all elite performers from Olympic, Paralympic and World Class Sports. They include numerous multi medal winners from World Championships, Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games. Some athletes are now retired from international competition and speaking is a large part of their current career.

Fees

The British Athletes Commission runs the coordination service free of charge. The Athlete visitors have agreed to charge fees of between £100- £300, for which they will invoice the school directly.

The scheme requires both Schools and Athletes to register for FREE on the appropriate section of the website.

  • This is a very quick and simple process for schools.
  • Athletes will need to provide information for screening purposes and testimonials to substantiate their visiting skills.

The scheme is open to other non-profit making organisations, please follow the directions for schools.

Independant Schools and profit making organisations are most welcome to use athletesDIRECT, but may be ineligible for the limited fee aspect of the scheme. Please follow the directions for schools and contact the scheme administrator.

How it works

The procedure is based on schools inviting athletes to their event via the website, and athletes indicating their availability for these events. Schools may then select the athlete most appropriate for their particular event.

Once registered, schools may;

  • Post visit requests.
  • Amend or cancel the request.
  • Search for athletes within their area.
  • Select which athletes to send the visit request to.
  • Check for athlete replies, confirm a visitor.
  • See the history of their past requests.
  • Provide evaluation data on both the visit.
  • See the athlete evaluation of the visit.

Once registered Athletes may;

  • Post their biography and images.
  • Amend biography and images.
  • Select the distance they are willing to travel to a visit.
  • Receive visit request invitiations.
  • Accept and decline visit invitations.
  • Look up the record of their visits, both accepted and declined.
  • Provide evaluation on the visit.
  • Access the school evaluation of their visit.
